[ADV] Olympus E-PL5 review #2

27 April 2013

Now as you read in my previous post on the Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5, I was pretty much trying out the Touch AF Shutter feature for most of the photos. You can read about that story here. Well, this time round I decided to try out the Art Filters feature which makes it easy to incorporate awesome special effects in your photos. The E-PL5 offers twelve Art Filters, including the new Water Color filter:

This is the orginal photo of the models during the Zardoze fashion show.

Pop Art Art Filter – makes the colours super vibrant!

Soft Focus Art Filter – creates a dreamy effect like you were dreaming about this fashion show

Pale and Light Colour Art Filter

Light Tone Art Filter

Grainy Film Art Filter – looks like it was shot with an old black and white film camera

Pin Hole Art Filter - The pinhole art filter forces every point emitting light in the scene to form a small point on the film, so the image is crisp. Focusing on the beam of light, this produces a pattern of light and dark regions in the picture.

Diorama Art Filter – gives a “miniature model” feeling by narrowing the depth of focus and enhancing color and contrast. Not so good for fashion shows, probably better for  architecture.

Cross Process – there are three different colours namely blue, purple and green.
No guesses for which one I used in this photo.

Gentle Sepia Art Filter – Like an old faded photo that was printed like 30 years ago.
Gives a very nostalgic effect.

Dramatic Tone Art Filter – check out the increase in contrast!

Key Line Art Filter – a really cool effect!

Here are some other photos captured using the Art Filters.
Soft Focus is one of my favorite filters!
Using the soft focus filter makes for flattering portraits and dream-like effects.

My friend Danny. Used the Key Line Art Filter for this pic.
Another photo taken in Ippudo using Pin Hole filter.

Captured this photo using pin hole filter, love the effects.

Can’t decide which filter to use? Simply use the Art Filter Bracket which can generate multiple pictures with different Art Filters with a single shot, freeing you from having to decide which Art Filter to use and surprising you with "unexpected discoveries" in ordinary, everyday scenes. It takes a while to process the shot though so use it only if you have at least 10 seconds to spare between shots.

A Slide Rec View function is also provided for sequential slideshow playback of Art Filtered pictures so you don’t keep having to push a button to go to the next photo.

The PEN Lite E-PL5 has an awesome feature called OI.Share which enables you to connect to your smart phone via WiFi. A must have in this day and age where we love to share our pics (wink! wink!). You need the FlashAir WiFi SD card for this to work and it comes FREE when you purchase the camera!!!! Just turn on the connection and use your phone’s WiFi.

You will be able to view thumbnails of the pictures in the camera on your phone display. Choose the pics to import and just click “Save” and the camera will start transferring the photos.

After that you can choose to edit the photo with one of the Art Filters and/ or upload it to Facebook, Twitter or other social media platforms. Amaze your friends with high-quality photos while you’re out and about!

The Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5 comes with Body, Flash FL-LM1, Li-ion battery BLS-5, Li-ion battery charger BCS-5, USB cable, AV cable, Shoulder strap, OLYMPUS Viewer 2 (CD-ROM), Instruction manual, Warranty card, MCG-4(Changeable Grip)
